The CBC 4-day summer workshop in Proteomics and Informatics will start on Monday August 4, 2008 at the CBC/UIC Proteomics and Informatics Services Facility (PISF). This intensive workshop will offer a theoretical and practical introduction to tandem mass spectrometry proteomics, including the key experimental methods and computational tools needed to pursue analysis of complex proteomic samples.

The Chicago Biomedical Consortium (CBC) and the Institute for Genomics & Systems Biology (IGSB) held an introductory workshop in High-Throughput Cellular Screening for faculty, staff and students. The workshop was held on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the Institute’s Cellular Screening Center (CSC) at the University of Chicago. The CSC facilitates drug discovery and development by defining the complex genetics underlying disease, isolating chemical compounds that affect specific cellular activities, and developing potential therapeutics to target disease pathways (see Services and Facilities at http://www.igsb.org). The Chicago Biomedical Consortium (CBC) held a specialized proteomics and informatics course on May 15, 2008 at the CBC/UIC Proteomics and Informatics Services Facility. Attendees participated in a full day of training and lectures. Lecture topics included Principles and Applications of Proteomics, sample preparations for mass spectrometry, approaches for protein purification and protein separation, and an introduction into the 21st century of Proteomics and Informatics applications. In addition, the participants were offered the opportunity to gain familiarity with the major equipment in the core facility and its capabilities. To view the flyer for this course click here.

Please note that full-time PhD students may be eligible for graduate credit when they attend certain CBC courses in affiliation with the TRAVELING SCHOLAR PROGRAM . The Traveling Scholar Program enables PhD students whose school is affiliated with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) to receive credit for participating in CBC offered courses. The Chicago Biomedical Consortium (CBC) invites students, staff and faculty to join our vibrant Proteomics and Informatics Club. Monthly club meeting provide an opportunity for discussions on basic mass spectrometry and proteomics as well as on new insights and recent advances in proteomics and data analysis. At each meeting, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty are invited to present their research interests followed by an informal discussion on “How can I use proteomics to advance my research?”

The Chicago Biomedical Consortium (CBC) held the first CBC Proteomics and Informatics Workshop on Monday, August 27, 2007 and Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at the Gleacher Center, 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago, Illinois. The workshop concluded with a one-day practical course at the CBC/UIC Proteomics and Informatics Services Facility on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Due to increasing interest, a second practical course in proteomics and informatics was held on November 14, 2007 at the CBC/UIC Proteomics and Informatics Services Facility. This course was a repeat of the first session offered on August 29, 2007. Both courses featured a full day of training which offered greater familiarity with the major equipment in the core facility and its capabilities. Specific training topics included sample preparation, peptide separation, mass spectrometry, and data analysis.

The CBC held its First RNA Symposium, "Evolution, Structure and Function of RNA," on June 27, 2007. The day long event took place at Abbott Auditorium in the Pancoe-ENH Building on Northwestern's Evanston Campus. A great event for Chicago's RNA research community, the symposium welcomed 80 participants along with 14 local RNA researchers presenting on their current work.

Abstract: Claims have been made that the application of supervised pattern recognition methodology can be used with mass spectrometry (MS) proteomic data to achieve near perfect sensitivity and specificity for detecting early stage cancer. So far those claims have not been verified partly due to the use of less than optimal experimental design. In the interim significant effort has been spent on proteomic biomarker discovery research (without significant positive results) largely using tandem MS platforms. Underpinning the proteomics studies are several key components including standardization of materials, bioinformatics, reagent development, MS improvements, and statistics. This presentation discusses the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Proteomic Technology Assessment for Cancer and a related study, focusing on the statistical design of experiment input.
